Six Steam Sale Strategies

NerdDad here.  The Steam Summer Getaway Sale has begun.

Steam is to your computer what the app stores are for your tablets and phones. Twice a year they run deep discounts and current and classic PC games.

1. Look at the top sellers.  Lots of people are watching the sale and many are looking for the best deal.  The top sellers are what the crowd thinks are the best current deals.

2. Check the ratings. Click on an unfamiliar game and look at the Metascore, which gives you a combined score from critics an users. Or you can search and see all the low-priced highly-rated games.

3. Wait for it.  Most of the games you’re interested will probably hit 75% off during the sale, with the occasional 85% or 90% discount for a few titles.

4. Remember, they’re not the only game in town. Gog, Desura and even Amazon often run deals during the Steam Sales

5. Vote. They have a running community choice deal based on user votes for what they want to see on sale next.

The Death of LucasArts Games

Just heard some shocking Lucas/Star Wars/Disney news. Disney is closing down LucasArts!

Ok, maybe they aren’t closing all of LucasArts but they are closing the games publishing section which employs something like 150 people! LucasArts is part of the Star Wars empire that Disney acquired fairly recently. They say that they will be going to a licensing model instead of an in house development model.

This was just announced so I am not really sure what all this means but I don’t think I agree with Game Informer when they say that this isn’t surprising. I am surprised because it seems they are just killing games in process rather than finishing them or having them finished by other developers. I agree with something that Tom Merritt said on Tech News Today about how I would have expected it be sold off before I would have thought that they would close it down.

So will this be good for Star Wars as a franchise? Is this a mistake on Disney’s behalf? Since they were already licensing out to other game companies, I don’t think it will be a game changer. I am very interested to see what the effects of this are.

My heart felt condolences go out to all the employees and I hope they all secure new positions immediately!!

Hip Hop Dance Experience

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

I recently got my happy little hands on Ubisoft’s new Hip Hop Dance Experience game for my Xbox 360! I was really excited to try this game out and it didn’t disappoint at all!

So I have a little confession…. I really like pop and hip hop and dancing but it is not an attractive site. I mean at all;). That is why this review is not accompanied by any personal pictures or videos. I didn’t want to burn your retinas. But that is a big benefit to this game! I can try to learn and practice moves in the privacy of my own home. I am not going to be a girl out at the club. The only public place I dance is at blogging conferences;).

Another big plus is the exercise that I get doing it! Now I have played the various Just Dance, Dance Central and Just Dance Disney but there were nothing as far as exercise in comparison. Luckily there are levels! And the better you get the more challenging you can go! The songs show you clearly their levels. But onto game play.

The interface of Hip Hop Dance Experience is pretty smooth on the Xbox 360 version. Of course it is easily controlled by hand gestures. You can also call up songs just by saying their names! Even if they aren’t on the screen. There are also various modes with party mode, marathon, battle and more.

The dance play itself is great! I am kind of uncoordinated so I love the fact that their are two dancers. One person facing away that you copy but then there is also a person facing you so you can see that view also! I really appreciate seeing both viewpoints! I also love the fact that the game clearly communicates where you are wrong. Where you are wrong it will glow red so you are very aware where you need to alter to perfectly execute the moves.

There is just one down side for me to the whole Hip Hop Dance Experience and that is that I don’t find it very kid friendly. These are hip hop and rap songs so if you wouldn’t let your kids listen to them…. Well, this might not be the game for them. But as for NerdDad and I? We give Ubisoft’s Hip Hop Dance Experience a definite thumbs up!!!

Stan Lee on Avengers: Battle For Earth Game

Yes, it is a little cheesy but fun to see Stan Lee out there pushing the video games too;). I will be putting up my review soon;).

Assassin’s Creed III Deal

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit to get your own copy of Assassin’s Creed 3, today’s Gold Box Deal of the Day! I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. All opinions are my own.

Brace yourself…. I haven’t played any of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.  I know, how can I be a geek? I love video games but to be honest, I have never had the time to dedicate to really get good at any that take real time since Gauntlet Legends.   But hey! I have been busy! You know, creating life,  having kids and raising them and homeschooling them… But today Assassin’s Creed III is the Gold box deal over at Amazon!!!

Since I have never really committed to any complex franchise I have been looking around. We all know Assassin’s Creed is a winning series, I like going with something tried and true;).  A main thing that I look for in anything that will take a lot of video game  time is that it is multiplayer!!! If I am going to pour hours into a hobby like that I want to play with my husband;).

The demos that I have seen have always look gorgeous! The story line is deep enough that they have released multiple episodes;). The game play seems smooth and involved! I love the reviews I have read like the one over at The Married Gamers.

So I am really looking forward to getting a hold of a copy of Assassin’s Creed III!!! I may have to give up sleeping for a while but… Darn it! I am going to spend some time exploring this game as a Christmas present to myself!

What geek-sploit are you going to have over the holidays? Is it a video game? Board game? Cos-play? Come on, spill!
