Cloud Storage: Why and Where

Cloud Storage

1)Back up storage
2)Easy sharability of files: You can send links or even share a complete folders. You just need the person’s email.
3)Access everywhere!!

Free Sources of Limited Space: (all of these have apps for mobile access)

1)SkyDrive: This is my current favorite cloud storage! You get 7GB free. What makes it special to me is that you can edit your Office documents in the Office Apps. If you are on a computer with Office you can also use it in order to get the full capabilities.

2)Amazon Cloud: This is great for media! You can get 5GB free and can pay to upgrade.

3)Google Drive: This can tie into your Gmail, Google Calendar and other Google Apps.

4)Dropbox: This is the original, reputable cloud storage service. I believe you get 2GB free to start. They often offer ways to earn more free space and you can always pay to upgrade too.

(Disclosure: I am in the Windows Champions program. That doesn’t influence my opinions.)

6 Must Have Windows 8 Phone Apps

When you get a new phone there is always the conversation as to apps. Here are 6 apps that are a must on my Nokia Lumina 822 phone!

1) Sky Drive: Access to my files are a must!

2)One Note: I save all kinds of notes to myself! They can pictures, links or lists and all have a home on my One Note. I can even share folders with the husband super easy.

3) Office App: I can keep track of work for clients, put together posts (with formatting) or anything else when I get a minute in the car.

4) You Version Bible App: Not only does it have a ton of different versions of the Bible but it also has all my church’s sermon notes (free to me and the church) and reading plans for devotions.

5) Facebook: I use this more to see what everyone else is doing than my own posts (I can make and manage those through the phone’s Me pane).

6) Twitter: I use twitter not only to keep up with my friends but also on news and the world!!! I don’t quite remember how I lived with out it;).

What are your must have Windows 8 apps?

(I am part of a Verizon Ambassador program and received the Nokia Lumina 822 for free. I am also part of the Windows Champions program. All opinions are my own!)

A Look at 2013 CES

CES (Consumer Electronic Show) was last week in Las Vegas. It is the time when all the companies that deal with technology on a consumer level come out for a huge game of show and tell. Some are things that are here, coming and hope to be coming;). I decided to take just a minute to look at a few of the cool things I have heard about (from home;).

The home show is a huge part of CES! Everyone brings out there concept models to get everyone excited!!! Why all the concept stuff and not just what is coming out new? Because it not only energizes people but it gets developers excited to work with them!

Whirlpool had their fireplace table along with a whole booth of awesomeness including Art Gallery Hoods and a house controlled by smart phone! The Smart Grid aspect (being able to manage your appliances power use is actually supposed to be coming out this spring.

Samsung brought out their smart home set up too that including their T9000 refrigerator with the lcd screen built in. I have already heard talk from someone at Evernote about how they are working the app for it. These devices are nothing now without apps!

Then there is the gadgets! There are toys like remote controlled toys & Lego stuff. There is also lot accessories. Sony showed everyone their new speakers including the bluetooth mobile speaker. IHome showed a ton of their new systems too. Then there are all the other “smart” accessories like the HapiFork that tells you to slow down when you eat and monitors your eating.

And then there are the machines! We already heard about the monitors. There are also the new phones and computers. Even there Microsoft wasn’t a big presence the new Windows 8 machines were a big thing and some of them are actually available now;). Lenovo showed their new machines like the Ideapad Yoga and Asus showed the ginormous 23 inch tablet!!!

There is so much more that happened at CES but these are just a few of the awesome highlights I have seen!!! Maybe next year I will muster another trip to CES and check it all out for myself!

A Glimpse at CES Day1

Picture from Cnet

I am not at CES this year but I, like every other geek in the world, am watching the announcements with bated breath! So here are some of the things I have found interesting!

The 32 inch View Sonic tablet looks very fun and cool! It is Windows 8 with 10 point multi touch. (Cnet)

Kingston has a 1Tb USB 3.0 flash drive….Is there really anything I can say to make that cooler? (DailyTech)

BuQu Tech announced a magnetizing iPhone 5 charger. I hope they release some for Android too! (i4U News)

There are a few awesome tools for the connected home like the Philips Hue system and the Wemo lighting control system. (Techlicious)

Tomorrow I will share what coolness I see;)!

A Look at the Nokia 822

At Blogher I had gotten a chance to play a little with Windows 8 but that was for just a few minutes. But at that time Verizon didn’t have a cutting edge Windows phone. But they do now!!! I was stoked to get my little hands on my first Windows 8 device when I was sent the Nokia 822 to try out!

First instinct out of the box was that it felt good in my hand. It was super intuitive and within a moment I had it checking my email, Twitter, and Facebook. It took longer to phone Verizon to switch service than to get up and running!

I really like the Windows 8 phone experience! It is extremely easy to customize the interface. You can rearrange all your tiles and size them with just a pinch. You shop the app store and pin what ever apps you want to your home screen. You can even set up groups with specific people in them and tiles with just 1 person (I set up my husband in his own).

Then there is the Nokia and the technical sides. There is a great 8mp camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The battery life is crazy long!!! I listened to music on the phone through blue tooth earphones all day on Black Friday, the battery wasn’t even down to half!!!

Then there are Nokia specific features. 1 is that they have their own maps and navigation system. And it is pretty good! They also have a music service. There are a variety of music lists (Pop hits, Christian hits, Christmas music, etc) and you can listen to it for free. Better than that? You can download them for free (on wifi) and listen to it when you are offline!

Ok, so that is all great things… but there is the down side. The notifications are a bit odd in comparison to the Android experience. It took me a bit to get used to it but you can depend on getting notifications on the top, instead check your tile. It feels like a negative but I don’t know if it really is.

Windows 8 is still a new environment. Which means it doesn’t have as many apps. And I am not talking about just quirky apps. I couldn’t find a good app to manage my Twitter well much less a tool to manage my clients’ Twitter and Facebook accounts. Normally I use the pro version of Hootsuite and it saves me so much time (and time is money;). The other apps I use daily that aren’t on Windows 8 yet are CoziFamily, Pinterest and Vons!

So I have put my Windows 8 Nokia 822 back in the box, awaiting the day the apps catch up with the coolness! My final analysis is that… I love the phone, the Nokia perks and the Windows 8 environment but with out a couple of apps that are key for me, I can’t use it yet. If you don’t need those specific apps, this may be the phone for you!!!

(Disclosure: I am in a Verizon Ambassador program. And so they sent me this awesome phone in the hopes I would want to tell you about it. So yes, that means I was given the phone by Verizon! I am separately in the Windows Champions program, just so you know,;)

A New Office & a Preview

Big doings at Microsoft today! There is a new Office coming out to go with the new Windows 8 and there is a free customer preview available. Score for getting to try it for free!

I made the jump from a super old Office to Office 2010 this year and I was impressed with all the changes and new features. I have also been super impressed with OneNote and SkyDrive. Between the growth in Office 2010 and all the promised goodness in Windows 8, I super interested! I really look forward to trying out the roaming and clouds features that are promised! The fact they are letting us all preview it speaks to how much confidence Microsoft obviously has in it.

I am off to go explore!
